Identification

10–11 cm (4-4½ in)
Male

  • Grey head, nape and throat
  • Dark brown mantle, back and upper wings
  • Orange rump

Papua New Guinea

Taxonomy

Subspecies

  • L. c. caniceps:
  • South-eastern New Guinea (Yule Island and Hall Sound to Port Moresby)
  • L. c. scratchleyana:
  • South-eastern New Guinea (Malalaua and Kupriano Mountains)
  • L. c. kumusii:
  • South-eastern New Guinea (Kumusi River to upper Musa River)

Habitat

Moist savanna, grassland, rice fields, airfields, roadsides, lawns. Sometimes in urban areas.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of seeds, both foraged from the ground and off the stem.
