Identification
Grayish upperparts with white spots on the head. White underparts.
Distribution
Colombian endemic. Occurs along the interior slopes of the West and Central Andes through the Cauca Valley.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
Two subspecies are recognized:
- P. g. antioquensis:
- Western Andes of Colombia (Antioquia to upper Río San Juan)
- P. g. granadensis:
- Northern Colombia (central Cauca Valley to upper Patía Valley)
Formerly considered conspecific with Olivaceous Piculet (Picumnus olivaceus).
Habitat
Dry to humid forest and edge. Also occurs in marshes and tree groves within agricultural areas.
Behaviour
Vocalisation
Give a 3-4 second trill that is reminiscent of Yellow-faced Grassquit, but is not as forceful and slows and tapers off at the end.
