Male 100–115 cm (39¼-45¼ in), female 61–70 cm (24-27½ in)

Distribution
Central and southern China.
Introduced on the island of Maui, where a small but widespread population spans the upper edge of the forest on the northeast slopes of East Maui, along the border between Waikamoi Preserve (Nature Conservancy and Haleakala Ranch) and Haleakala National Park.
Also introduced to France, New Zealand, Argentina and some shooting estates in England.

This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Mountain slopes with bamboo and thick shrubs.

The diet consists mainly of leaves and shoots of rhododendrons, bamboo and other shrubs. Also insects, including spiders.
