Identification
30cm
Dark brown upper and underparts.
Undersides of the wings "silvery" in flight, with a rather narrow dark trailing edge.
"Bull-headed" and rather short tailed in comparison to Bulwer's Petrel.
Similar Species
Lacks the white cap seen on the Black Noddy. Bulwer's Petrel has buff wing bars.
Distribution
Endemic to the Fiji Islands. Breeds on Gau Island but the status is uncertain.
Taxonomy
Pseudobulweria vs. Pterodroma
Clements (2010) and Sibley & Monroe (1996) place Mascarene Petrel, Tahiti Petrel, Beck's Petrel and Fiji Petrel in Pterodroma. However, Howard & Moore, 2003, Brooke 2004, Christidis & Boles 2008, and Gill & Donsker 2010 recognise the genus Pseudobulweria.
