Identification

17 cm. Brown streaks, white eyestripe, long wings; male - black chin.

Distribution

Eurasia and Africa.

Taxonomy

Coturnix coturnix has five subspecies:

  • C. c. coturnix;
  • C. c. conturbans;
  • C. c. inopinata;
  • C. c. erlangeri; and
  • C. c. africana.

Habitat

Grassland.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects and seeds.

6-18 eggs are laid in a ground nest, and incubated for 16-18 days.
