Synallaxis hypospodia

Identification

16 cm, as other members of its genus with long tail, rufous on crown and wings
Upperside mostly dark brown with rufous on wings extending down flight feathers, and dark, graduated tail. Underside has breast brownish grey with paler belly, lower throat black narrowly edged white at side and with mostly white above. Head had grey-brown sides and forecrown, with the characteristic rufous crown. Bill two-toned, black above and below grey with silvery or horn tones. Eye is reddish.

Similar species

More extensive rufous on wings than Dark-breasted Spinetail.

Distribution

South America: found locally from south-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia to south-central and north-eastern Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Grassland with scrub, both wet and drier areas (in Peru in dry intermontane valleys).

Behaviour

Usually occurs in pairs, and likely feeds on insects.
