This is generally regarded as a monotypic species[1], subspecies secundus is not recognised by most authorities[2].
Some authorities place this species in the genus Bonasa.

Habitat

Birch and coniferous mountain forest.

Behaviour

Breeding

They build a nest from moss and grass. The clutch consists of 5-8 white eggs.

Diet

The diet includes spruce seeds, buds, leaves, flowers, and shoots.
