Genus: Nucifraga
Description
Nutcrackers occur in both Eurasia and North America.
They have long, pointed bills and both species are primarily dependent on the seeds of large-seeded pines during autumn, winter and early spring, which they store in large quantities. They also feed on other tree nuts, and in the summer, also invertebrates, eggs, and other animal food. They are noted for their remarkable long-term spatial memory connected to their food storage.
Taxonomy
Nucifraga is a genus in the family Corvidae, with three species accepted.
It is sister-taxon to the genus pair Coloeus-Corvus.
