Identification
25 cm. Dark upperparts, pale underparts, white mark above eye, dark bill with pale spot, blue feet.
Distribution
North Pacific, islands off British Columbia and California.
Taxonomy
There are 2 subspecies.
Habitat
Sea; nests on offshore islands.
Behaviour
It nests colonially in burrows, digging a hole in the soil. 1 white egg is laid and incubated for 40 days by both parents; the young fledges 35 days later.
The diet includes fish, plankton and krill.
