- Pterodroma hypoleuca
Identification
30 cm. White head, black cap and face markings, pale grey upperparts, dark primaries and wing coverts creating a M mark across the back, white underwing with dark edging, dark grey tail, rest of the body is white, dark half collar on breast, black short and hooked bill, pink legs and feet with dark patches.
Distribution
North west Pacific and islands south of Japan and in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
Taxonomy
It has been split into 2 species:
- Pterodroma nigripennis
- Pterodroma hypoleuca
Habitat
Open sea.
Behaviour
The diet includes fish and squid.
Both sexes dig a 1-3m burrow nest in sand; 1 egg is laid and incubated by both parents for 50 days. The young fledges about 80 days later.
