Halobaena caerulea

Identification

29 cm in length and 48 cm in wingspan

  • White underparts
  • Grey upperparts with an "M" band
  • White tipped tail

Distribution

Islands in subantarctic southern oceans and islands off Cape Horn.

They breed on Marion Island, Prince Edward Island, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Archipelago, Macquarie Island and South Georgia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Pelagic when not breeding.

Behaviour

Breeding

They nest colonially in burrows; the single egg is incubated by both adults for 50 days, the young fledging after 55 days.

Diet

The diet includes shrimp, crustaceans, fish and squid.
