Identification
12 cm (4¾ in)
Male
- Bright yellow head, rump and underparts
- Black back, wings and tail
- White wing linings
Female
- Olive upperparts
- Yellow underparts
- White on the belly
- White tufts at the sides of the breast
Immatures similar to the female, yellower below, particularly on the belly.
Distribution
South America: found in Costa Rica and Panama.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- C. c. titanota:
- Caribbean slope of Costa Rica and western Panama
- C. c. chrysomelas:
- Central Panama
- C. c. ocularis:
- Tropical eastern Panama (Darién)
Habitat
Foothills and slopes, up to1200 m. They can usually be found in the canopy of wet forest and tall second growth.
Behaviour
Breeding
They construct a cup from fine rootlets; it is lined with black fungal rhizomorphs.
Diet
Their diet consists of arthropods and fruit.
Vocalisation
Call: a scratchy single or repeated tsew.
