- Chrysothlypis chrysomelas
Identification
12 cm. Male - bright yellow head, rump and underparts, black back, wings and tail. The wing linings are white. Female - olive upperparts and yellow underparts, white on the belly, white tufts at the sides of the breast. Immatures resemble the adult female, but are yellower below, especially on the belly.
Distribution
Costa Rica and Panama.
Taxonomy
There are 3 subspecies
- C c chrysomelas
- C c ocularis
- C c titanota
Habitat
Foothills and slopes, typically from 600 m to 1200 m altitude, and occasionally down to 400 m. The preferred habitat is the canopy of wet forest and tall second growth.
Behaviour
It builds a cup nest.
The diet includes small fruit, usually swallowed whole, insects and spiders.
Vocalisation
The call is a scratchy single or repeated tsew.
