Identification

14 cm (5½ in)

• Dark barring on tail
• White throat
• Whitish or dirty greyish-buff underparts
• Long bill

Distribution

Asia:
Asia: Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Burma

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies^[1]:

• C. h. taeniura:

• Central Asia and Afghanistan (north of the Hindu Kush)

• C. h. himalayana:

• Eastern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and Himalayas (east to central Nepal)

• C. h. yunnanensis:

• South-western China and adjacent Burma

• C. h. ripponi:

• Western Burma (Mount Victoria)

Habitat

Boreal and temperate forests. Also well wooded areas in winter.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of insects, spiders and small invertebrates.
