Identification
Size-21.5 to 23.5cm
A large, distinctive broadbill:
- head purple-red with black lores
- upperparts dark with prominent yellow markings
- back to base of upper tail yellow
- distal part of upper tail black
- wings blackish-brown with broad yellow on flight feathers
- underparts light purple-pink
- vent purple-pink or yellow (javanicus)
- undertail appears barred black and white
- bill turquoise-blue
- eye blue or yellow (javanicus)
Males have a narrow, blackish breast band (most subspecies except javanicus) and a greyer-tinged head than females
Distribution
Found from southeast Burma to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra and Java. Locally common in suitable habitat.
Taxonomy
Subspecies javanicus may be elevated as ”Javan Broadbill", C. javanicus based on plumage differences although it sounds similar to the other taxa [6]

Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]
- E. j. friedmanni: South-eastern Myanmar, Thailand and Indochina
- E. j. pallidus: Southern Thailand (Isthmus of Kra) and Malay Peninsula
- E. j. harterti: Sumatra, Riau Archipelago, Bangka Island and Belitung Island
- E. j. brookei: Borneo and North Natuna Islands
- E. j. javanicus: "Javan Broadbill". Java
