Afton State Park is located on the St. Croix River, on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border southwest of St. Paul, MN. It is located next to Afton Alps ski area. The park contains oak savanna and old farm fields at the top of river bluffs, and forested valleys draining to the river shore below. Much of the grassy fields are going through prairie restoration projects. Daily ($5) or annual MN state park pass required.
I was here on an unseasonably warm February morning, and surprisingly I saw very few birds - just a handful of crows, chickadees and cardinals. I guess this is only a birding destination in warmer months. In winter there are groomed cross-country ski trails, and in warmer months the park is probably quite crowded.
