Anderladen National Park

This is a large national park on the island of Senja, to the south of Tromso. Much of the park is mountainous, reaching more than 850m at the highest point, the remainder is pine and birch forest on the more sheltered side of the island and there are several lakes. Some of the gnarled and twisted pines of the valley forests are thought to be as much as 500 years old.

The area is not well-known for its birds but there are Whooper Swan and Goosander, Golden and White-tailed Eagle as well as gulls, terns and Arctic Skua. Waders include Turnstone, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover and Redshank. The forests have Brambling, Willow Warbler and Common Redstart.

Mammals in the park include Elk and Reindeer, Mountain Hare, Red Fox, Otter and Stoat and there is botanical interest in the orchids, which include Common Spotted and Coralroot.

To visit the park cross the Gisund Bridge from Finnsnes to the island and head south to Storjord. Cabin accommodation is available at Tranoybotn, just south of Storjord and the park is a short walk from here.
