Description

Location: Yapen Is., West Papua, Indonesia.

Identification

Dwarf kingfisher ( ceyx lepidus )

A very tiny kingfisher measuring 11-13 cm only. Also called Variable Dwarf kingfisher due to geographical variations that some Ornithologists consider them to be separate species alltogether. As most of the kingfisher species this bird is solitary and often more heard than seen near streams and rivers thus the nest is a hole dug in the banks. Feeds on insects captured in flight, spiders and crickets. Sexes are alike.

Range:Widespread in the Papuan region including the islands of the Geelvink bay, the Aru and the DEntrecastreaux. Found also in the Philippines, the Moluccas and the Solomon and Bismarck islands.
