Identification

23–27 cm (9-10½ in)

  • Darkish grey upperparts
  • Short yellow legs

Similar Species

Very similar to Wandering Tattler which is a little darker and has longer wings.

Breeds in Eurasia; winters in Malay Peninsula and Australasia.

Taxonomy

This species has been placed in the genus Heteroscelus together with Wandering Tattler, but Clements1 and Sibley & Monroe2 place it in Tringa.

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Their breeding habitat is along rivers and streams in forest tundra and montane taiga.

Behaviour

Their diet consists of insects, beetles and mosquitoes, aquatic larva, particularly in the breeding season, with crustaceans added during the winter months.
