Identification
17 cm (6¾ in)
- Lavender head, throat and breast
- Dusky green wings with yellow patches
- Dark blue and gray body
Juvenile has olive green head and upper back.
Similar Species
Palm Tanager found to the south of Yellow-winged Tanager's range.
Distribution
Central and South America: found from East Mexico south to eastern Nicaragua and Honduras.
Ebird.org shows a recent spread down through Nicaragua to northernmost Costa Rica.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Dryish to humid forest borders, clearings, plantations, parks and gardens. Can be found up to 1800 m.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists of insects and fruit, especially figs and nectar.
Breeding
Both adults construct a small cup-shaped nest of twigs, grass dry leaves, and mosses. The clutch contains 3 mottled brown gray eggs.
Voice
A fast, dry, almost rattling trill, occasionally ending with more musical notes.
