Automolus rufipileatus

Identification

19-20 cm
Mostly rufous with a stronger chestnut on the crown and somewhat darker on parts of the back. Bill and legs are greyish and iris is orange-yellow.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 recognized subspecies^[1]:

• A. r. consobrinus:

• Tropical eastern Colombia to the Guianas, northern Bolivia and western Brazil

• A. r. rufipileatus:

• Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Purús to northern Maranhão)

Habitat

Seems more common in seasonally flooded forest (varzea) than in other moist lowland forests.

Behaviour

Food involved mainly invertebrates but also smaller vertebrates such as tree-frogs. Feeding is low in dense vegetation, and observations indicate that food is most often sought in dead leaves.
