- Orthopsittaca manilatus
Identification
46 cm long and weighs 370 g. It is mainly green, with a red belly patch, blue forehead and upper wings, and the breast has a grey tint. The underwings and undertail are dull yellow. The face has large yellow area, partly consisting of bare skin. Sexes are alike; adults have a black bill, in young birds it is yellow.
The voice is a reedy, high-pitched scream.
Distribution
South America, from Colombia and Trinidad south to Peru and central Brazil and east to the Guianas.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species which in the past has been placed in genus Ara; some authorities still prefer Ara.
Habitat
Forest and swamps with Moriche Palms (one field guide states Mauritia palm). The clearing of palms has affected this bird.
Behaviour
Two white eggs are laid in a tree cavity.
Their diet includes the fruit and seeds of palm trees, especially the Moriche Palm.
