Identification
15–17 cm (6-6¾ in)
Male
- Chestnut crown
- Brownish sides of head and throat, with darker brown mottling
- Reddish-brown upperparts
- Buff underparts with black bars on the breast
- Dark tail with white bars
Distribution
South America: found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 5 subspecies[1]:
- T. r. jaczewskii:
- North Peru (Amazonas south of Río Marañón, Cajamarca and San Martín)
- T. r. marcapatae:
- South East Peru (Cusco and Puno)
- T. r. subfasciatus:
- Yungas of north-western Bolivia (western Cochabamba and La Paz)
- T. r. cochabambae:
- South Bolivia to north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán)
- T. r. ruficapillus:
Habitat
Semi-humid forest and second growth; also in dense shrubber.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of a variety of insects such as beetles, moths and ants.
