Thamnophilus ruficapillus

Identification

15–17 cm (6-6¾ in)
Male

• Chestnut crown
• Brownish sides of head and throat, with darker brown mottling
• Reddish-brown upperparts
• Buff underparts with black bars on the breast
• Dark tail with white bars

Distribution

South America: found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies^[1]:

• T. r. jaczewskii:

• North Peru (Amazonas south of Río Marañón, Cajamarca and San Martín)

• T. r. marcapatae:

• South East Peru (Cusco and Puno)

• T. r. subfasciatus:

• Yungas of north-western Bolivia (western Cochabamba and La Paz)

• T. r. cochabambae:

• South Bolivia to north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán)

• T. r. ruficapillus:

• South East Brazil to north-eastern Argentina, eastern Paraguay and Uruguay

Habitat

Semi-humid forest and second growth; also in dense shrubber.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of a variety of insects such as beetles, moths and ants.
