Identification
13-14 cm, a small flycatcher.
Male
- Black head, breast and upperparts, with greenish-blue gloss
- White underparts
- Dark eye
- Greyish eye
- Dark grey legs
Female
- Grey head and hindneck
- Brownish back, wing and tail
- Fawn rump and underside of tail
- Rufous throat and underparts
Immature similar to female.
Distribution
Endemic to Makira (San Cristobal) in the southeastern Solomon Islands.
A restricted-range species. Still common in suitable habitat but extensive logging has reduced the habitat of the species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Leaden Flycatcher, Steel-blue Flycatcher, Melanesian Flycatcher, Vanikoro Flycatcher and Samoan Flycatcher.
Habitat
Moist lowland and montane forests up to 700 m. Commoner at higher elevations.
Rare in degraded habitats.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on arthropods. Forages quietly in the forest canopy.
Breeding
Poorly known. One breeding record in June, the nest was placed in an isolated tree in a forest clearing and the pair was feeding one large chick.
Movements
A sedentary species.
