Introduced in the Hawaiian Islands, where its populations are rapidly growing in a variety of habitats.

Formerly placed in genus Cettia.
Clements recognizes six subspecies:
- H. d. borealis from Manchuria to Korea and southern China; winters to Taiwan
- H. d. viridis on southern Sakhalin and southern Kuril Islands; winters to south-east China
