Identification

Distribution

Japan.
Introduced in the Hawaiian Islands, where its populations are rapidly growing in a variety of habitats.

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Cettia.
Clements recognizes six subspecies:

  • H. d. borealis from Manchuria to Korea and southern China; winters to Taiwan
  • H. d. viridis on southern Sakhalin and southern Kuril Islands; winters to south-east China
  • H. d. cantans on the main Japanese islands south to Cheju-Do Islands
  • H. d. riukiuensis on Ryukyu Islands
  • H. d. restrictus on Daito Islands
  • H. d. diphone on southern Izu Islands, Bonin Islands and Volcano Islands

However, Gill and Donsker treat borealis as Manchurian Bush Warbler and include canturians in this species. The Opus awaits further clarification.
