Identification

10 cm long and weighs 15.5 g.

Black crown, wings and tail, black band across the midback. Orange head, neck, breast and upper back, olive green rump, yellow belly.

The female and young males are olive-green with a yellow belly.

Distribution

Pacific slope of western Costa Rica to western and central Panama (including entire Azuero Peninsula)1.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species2.

Habitat

Lowlands and foothills in semi-open moist forest, plantations and gardens.

Behaviour

The female builds the nest, a shallow cup, in a treem and lays 2 brown-speckled grey eggs, which are incubated for 18-21 days.

The diet includes fruit and some insects, both plucked from the foliage in flight.
