Identification

Length 12 cm. Dark grey above. White below. Relatively short tail for an Apalis.

Distribution

Tropical Africa: Nigeria to Uganda, Tanzania and Angola.

Taxonomy

Apalis rufogularis has seven subspecies:^[2]

• A. r. sanderi

• South-western Nigeria

• A. r. rufogularis

• Eastern Nigeria to Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic and the island of Bioko

• A. r. angolensis

• North-western Angola

• A. r. brauni

• Western Angola

• A. r. argenteus

• Eastern DRC to Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania
• Regarded as a separate species Kungwe Apalis by some authorities^[1][3]
• Classified as Endangered in the 2007 IUCN Red List^[1]

• A. r. nigrescens

• South-western Sudan to DRC, Zambia, north-eastern Angola, Uganda and north-western Tanzania

• A. r. kigezi

• South-western Uganda
