Identification

28-30cm

  • Brown back
  • Grey below
  • Buff central breast
  • Black patch on belly
  • Orange face
  • Orange bristles when breeding
  • Grey head

Female

  • Duller
  • Smaller belly patch

Juvenile

  • Grey brown
  • No facial or underpart markings

Distribution

Kyrgyzstan, China and Mongolia.

Taxonomy

There are 2 subspecies.

Habitat

Farmland, open countryside with some shrubs.

Behaviour

Terrestrial.

It nests in a lined depression and 18-20 eggs are laid.

The diet includes seeds, though the young take insects.

Vocalisation

Song: harsh kieerr-ik.
