Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. d. dauurica:
- P. d. suschkini:
- Steppes of Manchuria to western China (Gansu and Qinghai)
Three additional subspecies castaneothorax, turcomana and przewalskii are generally considered invalid[2]
Habitat
Farmland, open countryside with some shrubs.
Behaviour
Terrestrial.
Breeding
The nest is a lined depression into which 18-20 eggs are laid.
Diet
The diet includes seeds, though the young take insects.
Vocalisation
Song: harsh kieerr-ik.
