Identification

Tawny underparts, dull brownish-olive back and head, black tail and wings, white speculum; male has a yellow crown patch and a large black patch around the eyes - the black "goggles" for which the species is named. Female - similar but lacks the black goggles and the yellow crest.

Distribution

Eastern and southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and far north-eastern Argentina; a disjunct population in Peru, Bolivia and far north-western Argentina.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Low level forest and woodland.
