- Campylopterus hemileucurus
Identification
15cm; a large spectacular hummingbird with long, curved bill and distal half of the tail white. Body of the male is deep violet with green wing coverts. The female has a violet throat and undersides pale speckeled green. Young have buff edges to the feathers and lack any violet, although juvenile males may be dusky green-blue below. [1]
Distribution
Southern Mexico and Central America to western Panama. [2]
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized[2]: hemileucurus in the northern half of its range, mellitus in the southern half.
Habitat
Understory and edges of mountain forests, especially near streams. [1]
Behaviour
It builds a large cup nest placed on a low horizontal branch, usually over a stream and 2 white eggs are laid. [1]
The diet includes nectar.
