Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Aratinga.

• North Colombia (south to n Nariño) and extreme north-western Venezuela

• P. w. transilis:

• Extreme eastern Colombia to northern Venezuela

• P. w. frontatus:

• West Ecuador and western Peru (south to Arequipa)

• P. w. minor:

• Central and southern-central Peru (Marañón Valley south to Ayacucho)

Habitat

Light evergreen cloud forests and forest edges, disturbed secondary rain forest. Mixed woodland and agricultural areas. Sewage ponds surrounded by rice fields. Observed at heights ranging between 698 m and 1,110 m.

Behaviour

Diet

They normally feed up in the canopy on a variety of fruit and nuts.

Breeding

They build their nests in a crack in a cliff face.
