Pytilia phoenicoptera has two subspecies:^[1]

P. p. phoenicoptera

Senegambia to Burkina Faso, northern Nigeria and Cameroon

P. p. emini

Cameroon to northern DRC, northern Uganda and extreme southern Sudan
