Lophura erythrophthalma

Identification

Male 47-50cm

  • Glossy purple-blue black
  • Vermiculated white above and on sides of breast
  • Red facial skin around eye
  • Deep red rump
  • Short, buffy tail

Female 42-44cm

  • Glossy dark blue-black, including tail
  • Red facial skin around eye
  • No pale vermiculations

Distribution

South-east Asia: found in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

This was formerly considered conspecific with Bornean Crestless Fireback.

Habitat

Lowland forests with a requirement for mature forest or regrowth and a preference for humid areas. Found up to 300 m asl.

Behaviour

May seek food in small groups, usually on forest floor.

Diet

The diet includes termites, ticks, berries,and grubs.

Breeding

The 3-6 eggs are incubated for 24 days.
