Identification

Male
- Bluish-grey above
- Black side of the head and throat
- Narrow greyish white forehead and supercilium
- Dark grey underparts
- Black wing coverts with white edging which shows as 3 white wing-bars
- Red iris
Female
- Brown above
- Black mask
- White throat
- Buff underparts, forehead, supercilium and wingbars.
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
There are 7 generally recognised subspecies:
- M. m. elegans:
- M. m. myotherinus:
- M. m. incanus:
- North-western Amazonian Brazil (along north bank of River Solimões)
- M. m. ardesiacus:
- Western Brazil (River Japurá to lower River Negro)
- M. m. proximus:
- Western Brazil (south bank of River Amazon from River Purús to River Madeira)
- M. m. sororius:
- South-central Amazonian Brazil (south-eastern Amazonas, Rondônia)
- M. m. ochrolaemus:
- Brazil south of River Amazon (River Madeira to Tocantins, Mato Grosso)
Subspecies napensis is not recognised by all authorities. Subspecies ochrolaema is sometimes spelt ochrolaemus[2]
Habitat
Up to 700 m in the mid-and upper-canopy of humid tropical and mature secondary forest.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes insects and other arthropods.
Breeding
Monogamous. The clutch consists of two eggs. Both adults share incubation and care of the young.
