Identification
28–34 cm (11-13¼ in)
- Greyish-brown, including the underwings
- White belly
- Short, curved bill
Distribution
Breeds Siberia; winters to Philippines, Indonesia and northern Australia.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Forest clearings in river valleys, grassy wetlands, lagoons and billabongs. They breed in montane taiga.
Behaviour
Breeding
The nest is a ground scrape.
Diet
Their varied diet consists mostly of insects, including small invertebrates, grasshoppers, ants, beetles, caterpillars and spiders etc. The also eat some vegetable matter.
