Identification
11·5 cm (4½ in)
Male (nominate)
- Dark grey head, back and breast
- Red rump and upper-tail coverts
- Blackish-brown tail
- Pale brown upper wing
Distribution
Western Africa: occurs only in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola
Eastern Africa: Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi
Taxonomy
Euschistospiza cinereovinacea has two subspecies:[1]
- E. c. cinereovinacea
- Highlands of western and central Angola
- E. c. graueri
Habitat
Open grassland, especially with tall grass. Miombo woodland thickets.
Behaviour
Diet
They forage on the ground for small grass seeds and insects.
