Identification
- Black crown and nape
- Isolated eye on a completely white face
- Long bill
- Whitish throat washed orange-buff
- Rich cinnamon underparts
- Dark blue-grey upperparts
Sexes similar. Juveniles are duller and have a shorter, yellow-based bill.
Similar species
Similar to White-cheeked Nuthatch but finer bill and bright cinnamon below.
Distribution
Found in western China (Qinghai to s Sichuan, sw Gansu and Yunnan) and northeast Tibet.
Poorly known and probably rare.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly considered conspecific with White-cheeked Nuthatch and forms a superspecies with it.
Habitat
Spruce and fir forest, parkland and also areas with isolated trees.
Occurs from 2200m to 4000m, locally higher.
Behaviour
No information about diet.
A nest was recorded in July, no other information about breeding.
A resident species. Some altitudinal movements possible.
