Identification
11.5cm
- Olive green (the male being more strongly coloured around the head)
- Orange to dark yellow bib
- Long stripe from the beak to the 'ear' both above and below the eye
- Black bib below and surrounding the orange bib
Female: Paler and lacks the black bib
Distribution
South America: found locally in the Andes from Colombia to Ecuador and south-eastern Peru.
Rare and local.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
May form a superspecies with Sooty-faced Finch and is sometimes considered conspecific.
Placed in genus Lysurus by some authorities.
Habitat
Cloud forest. Often near streams.
Occurs at 750 - 1800m.
Behaviour
Diet poorly known.
Forages at or near ground.
Breeding season mainly March to April in northeast Ecuador. The nest is a large green ball made of moss, rootlets and live fern leaves, most often placed near a small creek. Lays 2 eggs.
A resident species.
