Distribution
Southern and central Africa.
Taxonomy
This species has two subspecies, fringilloides and pica; however, pica is not recognized by all authorities.
Magpie Mannikin is sometimes placed in the genus Lonchura.
Habitat
Subtropical and tropical (lowland) moist shrubland, forest and dry grassland habitat.
