Identification
40-46 cm (15¾-18 in)
- Face pale
- Ear tufts very noticeable, outward facing
- Belly whitish, barred
- Back dark with reddish brown bars
- Eyes brown
- Beak and feet yellow
Distribution
Southeast Asia: found in Indochina, Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Brunei, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas, Bali
Taxonomy
This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 2 subspecies.
Subspecies
- K. s. sumatrana:
- Southern Myanmar, peninsular Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Bangka Island
- K. s. strepitans:
An additional subspecies, tenuifasciatus, is not recognised by all authorities[2]
Habitat
Tropical rainforests and plantations.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes grasshoppers, beetles, small rodents, birds, and snakes.
Breeding
They nest in a tree cavity. A single egg is laid.
Vocalisation
The call is a low-pitched hoo.
