Identification

15-17 cm long. Upperparts are greyish brown and the underparts white, black legs.

Distribution

Almost worldwide.

Taxonomy

Subspecies1

  • C. a. alexandrinus - Widespread
  • C. a. dealbatus - breeds S Japan, Ryukyu Is. and e China; winters to Philippines, Borneo
  • C. a. seebohmi - SE India and Sri Lanka
  • C. a. occidentalis - Coastal Peru to s-central Chile

Habitat

Sandy coasts and brackish inland lakes, and is uncommon on fresh water.

Behaviour

It nests in a ground scrape and lays 3-5 eggs.

Diet includes insects and other invertebrates.
