Identification
Unmistakable. It is the only large pale gray and green pigeon within its range.
- Large sized pigeon
- Green back and tail
- Pale gray head and underparts
- Noticeable white eye-ring.
Similar Species
Allopatric Spectacled Imperial Pigeon (which see). Could be confused with sympatric Elegant Imperial Pigeon although this differs in:
- eye prominent yellow
- crissum area chestnut
- no eye ring
- overall even paler grey
Distribution
Endemic to Southeast Asia: found on Boano, Seram, Ambon and Saparua in the southern Moluccas, Indonesia.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
It was formerly included in White-eyed Imperial Pigeon, together with Spectacled Imperial Pigeon.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and mangrove forests.
Behaviour
Singles or pairs forage within forest and forest edge in the lowlands and hills.
Vocalizations
Includes an “ooWOO” call with a purring quality to the second syllable. Also gives a descending series of short “oo” notes.
