Identification

24 cm (9½ in) Male

  • Black face and throat
  • Greenish-blue crown, neck, breast and uppertail
  • Red belly
  • Black, finely vermiculated wings
  • Pale grey-horn to yellow bill
  • Yellow eyering

Female

  • Red belly
  • White chest
  • Grey breast
  • Black upper mandible, grey below
  • Broken white eye ring
  • Wings barred white black
  • White edged and black notched undertail

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • T. c. peruvianus:
  • T. c. curucui:
  • T. c. behni:

Two additional subspecies bolivianus and variegatus are not recognised by all authorities[2].

Habitat

Found in a wide variety of habitats from forest to scrub.
