Identification
24 cm (9½ in) Male
- Black face and throat
- Greenish-blue crown, neck, breast and uppertail
- Red belly
- Black, finely vermiculated wings
- Pale grey-horn to yellow bill
- Yellow eyering
Female
- Red belly
- White chest
- Grey breast
- Black upper mandible, grey below
- Broken white eye ring
- Wings barred white black
- White edged and black notched undertail
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- T. c. peruvianus:
- T. c. curucui:
- T. c. behni:
Two additional subspecies bolivianus and variegatus are not recognised by all authorities[2].
Habitat
Found in a wide variety of habitats from forest to scrub.
