Identification

13-14 cm (5-5½ in)

Buff body
Turquoise wings and tail
Black mask and throat
Coppery crown

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, The Guianas, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

Taxonomy

This species used to be placed in genus Tangara.

There are 7 subspecies^[1]:

S. c. fulvescens:

Eastern Andes of Colombia

S. c. cayana:

Colombia (east of the Andes) to Guianas, northern Brazil and eastern Peru

S. c. huberi:

North-eastern Brazil (Ilha Marajó region of Pará)

S. c. flava:

North-eastern Brazil (Maranhão and northern Goiás to extreme southern Bahia)

S. c. sincipitalis:

Central Brazil (Goiás)

S. c. margaritae:

Central Brazil (Mato Grosso)

S. c. chloroptera:

Paraguay to south-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais) and north-eastern Argentina

Habitat

Savannas, gallery woodland and forest borders.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of fruit with some insects also eaten.
