Identification
43-45½ cm (17-18 in)
- Dark green back
- Yellow below
- Red band across belly
- Black head
- Chestnut ear patches
- Dark brown-black bill
- Yellow streak to tip of upper mandible
- White iris
- Blue eye skin
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
There are 2 subspecies:
- P. c. castanotis:
- P. c. australis:
Habitat
Moist lowland rainforest to 900 m, swamp forests, lake and river edges.
Behaviour
Breeding
They nest in tree holes and in abandoned arboreal termitaria.
Diet
The diet includes fruit and insects.
