Identification
25 cms (9¾ in).
Small white area on forehead, broad black breast band, black upperparts, narrow white collar, throat and belly. Extensive dark barring on flanks. Bill and feet black.
Similar species
White-necked Puffbird has a larger white area at the front of the head, a broader white hindcollar and variable dark barring on flanks. The bill is bigger and the voices differ as well.
Distribution
Found in eastern Venezuela, northeast Brazil and the Guianas.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It is sometimes considered conspecific with White-necked Puffbird.
Habitat
Forest borders and secondary growth, they can be found from ground level to the canopy.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists almost entirely of insects. They follow ant swarms
Breeding
The nest cavity is excavated by both adults, in termite nests, tree holes or in the ground.
