Identification
A variable species.
Distribution
Mountains of New Guinea, from the Bird's Head, the Wandammen Mountains, and the Foja Mountains through central New Guinea to the Huon and Southeastern Peninsulas. Therefore, areas in both Indonesia and Papua New Guinea are included.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Four different species and subspecies have been lumped into the nominate subspecies of Mountain Owlet-nightjar, which therefore became monotypic. The lump was due to the large variation in plumage seen in all four. This includes what used to be Archbold's Owlet-nightjar.
Habitat
Moist montanes.
