Identification
33 - 36cm. A little known jay.
- Feathers on nasal tuft and forehead stiffy erect forming a frontal crest
- Black forehad, forecrown and side of head
- Sepia side of neck, throat and upper breast
- Narrow malar stripe cyan-blue
- Sky-blue washed white nape, hindcrown and hindneck
- Bluish-mauved upperparts suffused with brown-grey
- Greyish-horn tinged blue tail with narrow whitish tips
- Greyish-horn tinged blue underparts, becoming pale cream on undertail-coverts
- Yellowish-white eye
- Black bill and legs
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed
Distribution
Only found in extreme east Colombia, extreme south Venezuela and Amazonian Brazil.
A restricted-range species but currently not globally threatened.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies recognized:
- C. h. heilprini from southeastern Colombia to southwestern Venezuela and extrem northwest Brazil
- C. h. hafferi in southwestern Amazonian Brazil, from the west bank of the Purus River to the west bank of the Madeira River
hafferi was first described as full species, Campina Jay.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and dry shrubland on sandy soils. Recorded at 100 - 250m.
Behaviour
Poorly known. No information about diet.
Juveniles were noted in March and April, a nest described as basin-shaped structure made of twigs.
Probably a sedentary species.
